LIVE TRAINING WITH NYC PRO BASSIST LORIN COHEN:
How to Finally Say Something on Bass ā Without More Modes, Scales, or Theory
A 90-minute live training for bassists who knowĀ can't implemement what they know when it's time to take a solo
Lorin has been a featured on/at:Ā
Does this sound like you?
You've put in the work.
Years of lessons. Modes memorized. Scales you can run in every key. A binder ā or a Google Drive folder ā full of jazz vocabulary you've copied down from your favorite records.
And when it's time to actually play a solo?
The changes move. The melody flashes by. And somewhere between what you know and what comes out of your hands, it all falls apart.
You're not alone in this. I hear the same thing from serious, dedicated bassists again and again:
"I went through years of tuition and learned dozens of scales and arpeggios ā but I have no idea how to use any of it."
"Learning the modes is one thing. Applying them in a musical way is something else entirely."
"When chords are moving fast, I freeze. I just want to relax and say something meaningful on the bass."
Here's what nobody tells you: the problem was never that you don't know enough.
It's that you know too much ā with no way to filter it in real time.
I've spent decades on stages where there's no second take. Blues Alley. Birdland. Mezzrow. Ten years on the bandstand with Monty Alexander, playing changes that don't wait for anybody to think. And what I learned up there isn't more theory ā it's the opposite. It's how to take everything you already know and boil it down to the handful of choices that actually work, in real time, under pressure.
That's what this training is.

Here's what we'll cover in this training:
- How to close the gap fromĀ your headĀ to your hands, so you can stop feeling like knowledge and playing are two separate skills
- How to move fromĀ just "knowing modes" to applying them in a musical fashion, so you're not stuckĀ with knowledge you can't turn into music
- How to transformĀ scales and arpeggiosĀ into something you can actually use and make meaningful music with on the spot
- How to relax and say something meaningful on the bass, so playing feels like expression again instead of a memory test
- How to apply thisĀ to real,Ā jazz tunesĀ so you can link the chord changes quicklyĀ instead ofĀ feeling like you're chasing each and every chord

Why This Approach Works When Others Haven't
I'll be straight with you.
I'm Lorin Cohen ā professional bassist and educator based in New York City. For over 25 years I've toured and recorded with jazz luminaries including Monty Alexander, Joe Locke, and Larry Fuller, performing at venues including Birdland and Mezzrow.
I hold a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies from Queens College (CUNY), have taught at the City University of New York, and my YouTube channel has surpassedĀ views. My debut albumĀ HomeĀ was recognized by DownBeat Magazine.
I've spent decades inside the deepest soloing tradition there is ā jazz harmony. And what I've learned, from performing at the highest level and from working with hundreds of adult students, is this:
Most intermediate players don't fail at soloing because they lack knowledge. They fail because they have too much of it with no clear hierarchy. No one ever told them which tool to reach for first.
Jazz demands that clarity. You can't fake your way through complex changes with vague ideas about scales. You have to know ā instantly, automatically ā where to go. The Entry Point System takes that jazz-level precision and makes it accessible to any bassist, at any level, in any style.
That's not a marketing claim. It's what I see happen every time a student stops trying to know everything and starts committing to one clear system.

Who This Is Actually For
I've worked with adult bassists at every level. And I know exactly who's reading this page right now.
You might be the player who knows a lot but can't access it under pressure. You've studied modes, you've worked through scale patterns, you understand chord theory ā but the second it's your turn to solo, all of it vanishes. You don't need more information. You need a system that makes the right choice obvious in the moment.
You might be the player who's been bouncing between approaches. Someone told you to use pentatonics. Someone else said chord tones. Another teacher said think about arpeggios. You've tried all of them, none of them stuck, and now you have a head full of half-learned systems that conflict with each other every time you try to play. What you need is one approach you can commit to ā and actually master.
You might be the player with 20 minutes a night. Full-time job, family, limited practice windows. You can't afford to spend that time wandering through a content library trying to figure out what to work on. You need someone to give you one clear thing to practice ā and explain exactly why it will make you a better soloist.
You might be the player who sounds fine on familiar tunes but falls apart on anything new. You've got a handful of progressions you can navigate ā but the moment someone calls a tune you haven't specifically prepared, you're back to survival mode. The Entry Point System gives you a framework that works on any changes, not just the ones you've memorized.
You might be the player who's bought courses before and didn't finish them. The issue wasn't motivation ā it was that the course kept adding more to learn without ever giving you a clear, actionable system for what to play when you solo. This is built differently.
If any of those sound like you, keep reading.
